![]() ![]() It’s led to me looking for even more books like The Expanse. I’m forever thankful for that friend’s recommendation and for not losing that sticky note. When I finally sat down to watch the show, I was completely drawn in, lost in space in the most perfect way. I remember writing the show’s name on a little sticky note at work and tucking it away to look into later. When I replied I hadn’t, he told me to check it out. One of my co-workers at the time asked me if I’d ever heard of the TV series The Expanse, based off the books by James S. A hint of spring hung in the air, yet I still hadn’t shaken off the last dregs of the retreating cold and dark season. It had been a few years ago, and we were just getting to the end of a long and dreary winter. I’ll never forget the first time I heard about The Expanse. ![]() ![]() ![]() They can also have fun imagining what other items could be transformed to help Cinderella get to the ball! “ The Emperor’s New Clothes” by Hans Christian Andersen This older version is a little different than the Disney movie, so ask kids if they can identify the changes. George W Bush once joked that it was “10,000 pages long”. But if you wanted those illicit details (“immoral and foolish” is all he has to say), you had to sift through more than 1,000 pages documenting the US president’s childhood in Arkansas and time in office. My Life by Bill Clinton ($15m, $19m today) So good value for all?īill Clinton’s My Life, piled high in a Barnes and Noble in 2004. The first in the trilogy, Fall of Giants, sold 2m copies in 10 weeks, thus providing many households with a 1,000-page book that could also serve as a paperweight or deterrent for house intruders. It wasn’t out of the blue: by that point, Follett was the author of four bestselling historical novels, all of which reeked of being potential Hollywood fodder. Why ? Penguin paid the hugely popular Follett $16.5m per book in his Century trilogy. But once known for bashing out serviceable thrillers, Patterson is now probably more famous for managing a kind of Victorian publishing factory, presiding over an empire of keen, younger writers who are willing to write books that Patterson can pop his name on. Patterson sells, on average, 20m books a year in two years alone, it is estimated he earned $500m (£405m) for his publisher, Hachette, so this mind boggling deal for 11 adult books and six aimed at children over three years was a steal. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It serves the interests not merely of status but of power. In other words, the esthetic world view serves as an instrument of domination. “Bourdieu’s analysis transcends the usual analysis of conspicuous consumption in two ways: by showing that specific judgments and chokes matter less than an esthetic outlook in general and by showing, moreover, that the acquisition of an esthetic outlook not only advertises upper-class prestige but helps to keep the lower orders in line. The work in some ways redefines the whole scope of cultural studies. “One of the more distinguished contributions to social theory and research in recent years… There is in this book an account of culture, and a methodology of its study, rich in implication for a diversity of fields of social research. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This guy decides to take it to another level, he kisses her, keeps DESPERATELY BEGGING her to love him back, even if she keeps brushing him off. Since he lived in Bihar most of his life his English is pretty screwed up and I for one am not the judgmental type when it comes to not knowing English, and i also thought this book was better because of this detail. Bihar is one of the most backward states in India and is generally looked down upon by many. He comes from a "not so royal anymore" royal family from the state of Bihar. What perplexes me still is that fact that I wasn’t truly enjoying the book but I couldn’t seem to set it aside. The story would have been better served with less religious ritual detail and more social commentary, less education and more autobiography. It’s one thing to inform a non-Jewish reader, but quite another to drone on ad nauseum. Had Traig chosen to tell her story without such depth of explication regarding Jewish ritual I would have enjoyed it much better. But the author’s particular type of OCD is a religious compulsion and her heritage is Jewish, so the stories (and compulsions) are endless. The writing is good, the story intriguing. If only the book had held up to that reputation. And the fact that the author wrote with a clear view of her past and much humor made it all the more fascinating. ![]() I was intrigued when I first heard of it a few years ago, very interested to read a true life story about the struggles with OCD.
